Benefits of Snail

Health Benefits of Snail
Benefits of Snail

Snails belong to a large class of invertebrates within the phylum Mollusca. This class of invertebrates are called Gastropoda. This class comprises snails from saltwater, from freshwater, and from land. Sea snails lived 550 million years ago and land snails evolved 286 million years ago. There are over 43,000 snail species found in different parts of the world. Snails have no bones and their shells are made of calcium carbonate with protein layers which harden over time.

Snails are closely connected to human species, sometimes as food items, sometimes as decorative objects, sometimes as pests, and sometimes as vectors of disease. Sea snails are found in red, orange and yellow colours whereas land snails use camouflage colours such as white, brown and grey to hide from their many predators.

Snails have a simple brain. Still the are capable of associative learning and of forming long-term memories. It compels our wonder that they can lift up to 10 times their own body weight in a vertical position.

Snails have over 14,000 teeth on their tongue and they can locate food a few metres away due to their extraordinary sense of smell. The larger set of tentacles is their eyes, although they are almost blind and the smaller set is their olfactory organs.
Health Benefits of Snail
Benefits of Snail

Snails are one of the slowest creatures found on the planet earth. They move at a speed of 1.3 centimetres per second. They are normally active at night or during the day if it rains. Many species of snails hibernate in winter or during severe droughts, by sealing their entrance with dried mucus called an epiphragm and then gluing themselves to something in a shady place.
The largest land snail recorded was a giant African snail measuring 30 centimeters long and weighing nearly one kilogram. The normal lifespan of most of the snails is around five years. Some species of snails can live up to 25 years.
Snails are hermaphrodites. In biology, a hermaphrodite is an organism that has complete or partial reproductive organs and produces gametes normally associated with both male and female sexes. Most of the invertebrates do not have separate sexes. In these animals, hermaphroditism is a normal condition. This property of hermaphroditism enables the animals to form sexual reproduction in which either partner can act as the male or female. Some species of fishes and most plants are also hermaphrodites. Mating occurs mostly at the end of spring season into early summer season and 80 -100 eggs are laid in the soil.
Baby snails are transparent. They hatch within two to four weeks and it takes up to three months for them to fully develop their adult colours. They reach adult size and sexual maturity in two to three years.
Some snail species cause great damage to agriculture as they spread very quickly. Most of the gardeners try to kill snails using chemicals. But it has been observed that if the snails are displaced from their position to somewhere nearby place, they usually do not come back to the same place. So adoption of this technique will be favourable to our eco system.
Health Benefits of Snail
Benefits of Snail

Snail is a good source of protein, iron, vitamin B12, magnesium, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids.

Protein

Protein is essential for building and repairing muscle. Snails provide a low calorie source of protein. So snails as seafood can be an easy source of protein.

Benefits of Lamb Meat

Lamb is a type of red meat that comes from young sheep. It is a rich source of high-quality protein and it is also enriched with vitamins and minerals. So regular consumption of lamb meat may promote muscle growth, maintenance and performance.

Lamb meat is most often eaten unprocessed, but cured, but cured lamb is also common in some parts of the world.

Lamb meat is primarily composed of protein. The protein content of lean, cooked lamb is usually 25% - 26%. Lamb meat provides all nine amino acids, which are needed for the growth and maintenance of our body. Eating lamb meat promotes required nutrition for muscle tissues to be built up. Therefore, eating lamb meat is beneficial for bodybuilders, athletes etc.
Health Benefits of Lamb Meat
Benefits of Lamb Meat

Lamb contains varying amounts of fat. The fat content is usually around 17% - 21%. The fat content is mainly composed of monounsaturated fat and saturated fats in approximately equal amounts. Lamb meat also has very small amounts of polyunsaturated fat. Lamb fat contains slightly higher levels of saturated fat than beef and pork. Saturated fat is considered as a risk factor for heart disease. Lamb fat also contains a family of trans fats such as conjugated linoleic acid, which is beneficial for health.

Lamb meat is a rich source of vitamin B12, selenium, zinc, vitamin B3, phosphorus, and iron. Lamb meat also contains a number other vitamins and minerals in lower amounts. Consumption of cured lamb should be avoided as it contains high amounts of sodium.

Lamb meat also contains creatine, taurine, glutathione, and cholesterol.

Health Benefits of Lamb Meat

Lamb meat can be an excellent component of a healthy diet because of its high nutritional value.

Anaemia

Anaemia is characterized by low levels of red blood cells and hence decreased oxygen-carrying capacity of blood. The main symptoms of anaemia are fatigue and weakness. Main cause of anaemia is iron deficiency and it can easily be avoided by making appropriate selection of diet. Eating of lamb meat can easily compensate for this deficiency of iron and hence can prevent anaemia.
Health Benefits of Lamb Meat

Heart Disease

Heart attacks, strokes and high blood pressure are common cause of premature death. Some scientists have found that both processed and unprocessed red meats have increased risk of heart disease, whereas other scientists have revealed mixed results on the link between red meat and heart disease. Many people believe that meat causes heart disease because it contains high amounts of cholesterol and saturated fat. But most scientists do not believe that diatery cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease. Eating of lean lamb meat has same effect as eating of fish or chicken. Still, people should avoid eating high amounts of cured lamb meat or lamb meat cooked at high heat.

Health Benefits of Lamb Meat
Benefits of Lamb Meat

Cancer

One of the world's leading causes of death is cancer. People who eat a lot of red meat are at a higher risk of colon cancer over a long period of time. Heterocyclic amines of red meat may increase the risk of cancer. These cancer causing substances, heterocyclic amines, are formed when meat is exposed to very high temperatures, such as during frying, baking, or grilling. Heterocyclic amines are found in relatively high amounts in well done and overcooked meat. Eating of overcooked meat may increase the risk of colon, breast and prostate cancers. Therefore, moderate consumption of mildly cooked meat is likely safe and healthy.

Muscle Maintenance

Intake of high quality protein is very important for maintaining muscle mass for all people. Fortunately, lamb meat is one of the best diatery sources of high-quality protein. Lamb meat contains all nine amino acids which our body needs. Inadequate intake of protein may increase the risk of sarcopenia. Therefore, regular consumption of lamb meat or any other high-protein foods may lead to a healthy lifestyle.

Physical Performance

Lamb meat contains beta-alanine, which is an amino acid. Our body uses this amino acid to produce carnosine, which is a substance necessary for muscle function. High levels of carnosine in human muscles decreases fatigue and improves physical exercise performance. Therefore, regular consumption of foods rich in beta-alanine such as lamb meat may benefit athletes and those who need increase their level of physical performance.
